Wingfoot is a big loser. He wrote a good book but it is still set up to where you need the data book. How many books do you think he has sold? He still asks for donations for a website that dosent even work for the past 6 months. I wis somone would tell me what was wrong with the old website to begin with.
Jesse
Jesse,
Maybe Wingfoot got a little burnt out trying to maintain a website and keeping his book up to date but I don’t think that makes him a loser. Keeping up a large website is a lot of work and it’s easy to tire of the task. I imagine he gets a lot of email and that alone can drive you crazy.
I think he’s pretty cool and like everyone else wish his book came out a little earlier but hey, that’s life.

Whatever the reason, Wingfoot has pretty much shot himself in the foot and missed out on an opportunity to supply this year’s thru-hiker class with his updated handbook. From the party line on most listservers it appears that while many hikers wanted his book, most of them have given up and grabbed a different one. Getting too close to everyone’s start date (not to mention those already out there) but no book in site. Still not showing up on Amazon or Barnes & Noble website as of today. Singh Loi …as the saying goes !!

Not only did the 2002 Companion go on sale in mid-January. You can also download it at
http://www.aldha.org/comp_pdf.htm for free.
Leif
Thanks for that info about the Companion. I didn’t know you could download it for free ! That is really good to know as I was going to use my 2001 guide.

To Jesse!
Can you say you’ve personally raised over a million dollars for the preservation of the AT? Can you say you’ve spear headed campaigns to successfully save valuable land from development along the AT? Can you say you’ve thru-hiked 7 times? How about provided Thorlo with the original design of their hiking sock? Didn’t think so. Watch who you’re calling a loser. In fact, perhaps you should consider donating something to Wingfoot for his endeavors to provide an informational website to future thru-hikers. I think you owe it to him. -Grimace ME->GA ,01
Grimace
and he only lied to me three times…informative trail guide, though. Thaaaanks Wingnut!
Freakshow
Come on you guys. Let’s not use this as a forum for bashing or un-bashing. I follow this site for the brotherhood of fellow trailnuts like myself. It’s pretty obvious what Wingnut has done for our cause. Peace.
Lonewolf
Guess I’ll have to vote with Grimace on this one. Jesse, what have you done for the AT? Have you even hiked it once? Have you helped anyone else hike it? Have you inspired anyone else to change their life? Have you personally made a difference to the AT community? If not, then I suggest you might want to reconsider your statements. Is there a problem with Wingfoot’s site and book? Sure there is. However, since you don’t know what the reason is or what the cause of the problem is, what makes you the expert on Wingfoot? It is oh so easy for so called “experts” like you to throw stones. Well, hike your own hike buddy. Leave the man alone. When you become half the hiker he is, maybe you can reconsider your opinions.
Moose
Hey, grimace, you and pinball make it? (I hope I have the right Grimace here!) If so, than thanks for the company on the LT and my best to you guys. Later.
PS- back on subject: I’ve disagreed on some things with Wingfoot, but he deserves some respect!

Wingfoot’s website says that “the The 2002 Northbound Edition has now been been sent to the printer. The printer has done the setup for “print on demand” and I have verified that everything is set up okay. It has been released for distribution to booksellers.”
I gather this means that as soon as the printer has churned them out they will available from the various outlets such as Amazon.com.
Wingfoot suggests that those who want the book ASAP should keep an eye on his website as this is the only reliable source where the latest information on its availability can be had.
Downunda
The debate over when Wingfoot will finish his book and is getting his book out is rapidly becoming absurd. ALDHA’s use of the PDF format to package their book and distribute it to hikers has now become the standard by which all hikers in the future will find and collect information on the trail for their thru-hike.
I am thrilled that they have taken the step of bringing reliable and important information to AT hikers through their bold action of making the Companion open source via the PDF format and using their vast collection of experts to insure that the Companion is current and accurate.
As an AlDHA member, I contribute to their book. If Wingfoot were to make his book a PDF file for my computer and ask for donations, I would more than likely contribute to it.
But I think the standard has been reset by ALDHA. Thanks Wingfoot for your contributions over the years.
Mr. Boo
I have nothing against WF. But wanting a current issue of a trail guide I did download the ALDHA for free. I had it when I wanted it and hope it serves me as well as the Thru-Hikers Handbook last year. HammockHanger

Wow I didnt know you guys were so hostile mabye you should spend six months in the woods to cool off. Anyways sorry if I offended someone but I have my opinion and thats that but I will retract the whole loser thing.
Jesse
Six months cooling off in the woods is a great idea, Jesse. Anyone GAME?
A future thru hiker who wants help does not like excuses or high words telling him or her why they can’t get the latest, best, and most accurate books, maps, and materials for their thru-hike.
Naturally, one is going to sound a little ticked if the most well known source everyone quotes to you is not on time with a book or has been shut off from you by his shut down of his website. Of course you are going to react negative.
Jesse, if there is anyway us alumni can help you plan a successful thru-hike because you don’t feel WF is there for you, we are here to help. And I hope we have.
I can’t speak to WF’s motives or actions, but I and other alumni can give you what we can from our limited experience. Together, we might just add up to WF’s experience. Good luck on your planning.
Mr. Boo
Wingfoot has new info up on his site, but nothing helpful =/
He has an ISBN number for easier ordering… If you can find someone to do it… The number is 0-9707916-1-5. I think I’ll just stick with last year’s copy.

I took a look at the 2002 Companion at the ALDA site. Very nice…but I could not locate the pages for the CT / MA sections. Did anyone see these sections ?
