What do folks wear for winter camp shoes when beginning an AT thru-hike in March? And how much did the shoes weigh? Thanks, Annie K

We got something called Mules. Down filled mocs from Campmor. No more cold feet at night.

I got a pair of Seirra Design Booties. They weigh almost nothing, have a decent sole, and will compact small. No ankle support to speak of so be careful on off camber slopes when wet

My feet never got cold and they felt so good at camp. Heck I even use them in the summer

Another vote for Waldies. With 2-3 pairs of socks for winter camping.

I was gonna buy those Sierra Designs booties, but by then I’d spent a ton of $dough on gear, so I went the cheapskate route. I took a pair of cheapo- Target slippers from the back of my closet & used those for winter camp shoes. Worked great. They were the ones that look like high-top sneakers, fuzzy inside. They had no traction but were much lighter than anything available thru REI (inc. those down booties). Nice and warm & comfy, machine washable.

But Waldies with socks work good too!
