Does it mean that the streams won’t dry on us?

Right now there is about 6" to 2 foot of snow in the TN/NC area. Still, crafty hikers shuttle out and are braving the storm. I know of about 40 hikers who left Hot Springs this weekend who are making the trek north. At Miss Janet’s people are slack packing and having a ball as well.

Just because Indian Summer or Blackberry winter have come and gone, there is no need to worry about the trusty thruhiker. We’re a tough bunch.

Once you acclimatize to winter, you can handle much more than you expect.

The ever crafty, Burn.

I’m sorry ,thats just the way it is. Always check for Avalanche conditions at the park office before proceeding and always carry a Avalanche beacon, I would recommend the Ortovox F1.

We forced our way over Big Bald (between Hot Springs & Erwin) yesterday. There were 12-18 inches of snow in 40mph winds, causing white out conditions & obliterating the trail. The only way to navigate was by the wooden posts every 75 feet, but you couldn’t always see the next post until you got near it.

Grayson Highlands is supposed to have the same conditions. Be smart.

hello to all, i’m here at Standing Bear Farm hostel in Davenport, which by the way is superb, i got stuck in the smokies in a foot of snow, it made for some very slow cold hiking, my first day in the smokies was in the 80’s and now this, wow, lastnight i spent in the Mt. Camereer fire tower, talk about windy, we figured the wind chil was around -20, needless to say for the past few nights i haven’t got much sleep, i decided to forego the final shelter and hike on through to this hostel,
warm bed=happiness, well that all i got to say

Didn’t any old time mountaineer ever say that to you. You can’t tell the mountain what to do, and you must find its love for you. unconditional.
