I’ve found this web site to be helpful in figuring out what the temperatures are likely to be anywhere on the AT:

don,t under estamate the gsmnp in feb. i lost 18 lbs on a trip from davenport gap to fontana years ago. two foot snow. -18 and wind. only saw two people the whole trip, at newfound gap. it was the coldest expo i have been on. if we had had a major malfunction we would have been in trouble. lots of ice on the trail also!

Wool, wool keeps you warm even when its wet, and it is fire resistant, meaning a spark from a fire wont melt a hole in it like fleece or nylon…

might wanna check out another post on the forum right now : “jack bailey’s gear+winter”…i always liked layering…my favorite piece was a “poofy” vest paw-ee made for me (very simple…very lightweight) that i could wear in the mornings while i was packin’ up and then slip under the bands on the back of my pack when we started hiking (that way i could slip it off, too, for a little extra warmth on breaks)…smartwool is great!..lightweight, soft and doesn’t stink!.. well…relatively! :>)
