Winter in va - Appalachian Trail

I’m planning a hike from Fox Creek, Va to Pearisburg at the end of December/early January. Are there any things to look out for on this section at that time of year, ie lots of ice, dry springs,…? Also, is there a safe place to leave my car in Pearisburg for two weeks?
Thanks

This year water should not be a problem, but it will be Deep Winter when you’re out there. Hope for the best, but be prepared for the possibility (not probability) of sub-zero temps and extreme blizzards. They do happen in Virginia’s mountains once or more per year on average.

Maybe one of the motels listed in the Companion or Wingfoot would let you park? They probably won’t be doing much business by January, so if you offer a few $$$ one or more should jump at it.

Not sure about Southern VA, but we had a severe ice storm up here in SNP territory on and around Thanksgiving. The trails here are a mess. The wind storm a couple days ago just made things worse.

The Rendezvous Motel,540-921-2636, allows parking.

The Holy Family Church Hostel allows parking BUT is about 3 miles from the trail. SAFE but 3 miles from the trail.

Wade’s Supermarket has a good size parking lot that allows parking and is right on the trail/Hwy 460.

Hope this helps…
