Time to winterize my backpacking gear. I want to find out what people recommend and why:

Crampons - Petzl’s or Black Diamonds’s?

Snowshoes - MSR’s or Tubb’s?

I’ve just bought Petzl Irvis Flexlock. I haven’t had a chance to try them. But I’ve just found they just fit small boots. Mine (US 9) are too long. I have to spend 17$ to buy an extension.

For snoe shoes, get Norther Lites: http://www.northernlites.com/.

They are the lightest available.

I LOVE the MSR Denali Ascent. Their pop-up heel lifters allow you to have your feet horizontal in a slope.

If you are just hiking and backpacking you do not need mountaineering crampons. I would recommend Katoohla’s. I think thats the spelling. They are made for hiking with a much shorter tine and a flexible hinge. If you go with a full crampon make sure its flexible and not ice climbing crampon. The Katoohlas are also much lighter. I have been using Tubbs snoeshoes for years but I’m sure there are better lighter snowshoes developed in the last 10 years since I bought my pair.

You would have to mention you style of hiking and where etc.
