Wolf guidebooks

I’m planning a NOBO hike for this summer. I already have Ley’s CD of maps and the DeLorme maps. But, since I’m using a compass and no gps, I suppose I should order Wolf’s books as well. Trying to save money, I’m wondering if I need all of them and do I need the map packs? Thanks for the advice!

I’ve hiked the vast majority of the section between Mexico and Silverton, Co. I found Wolf’s guides to be invaluable. I think I’m pretty good with a compass too, but there were a lot of tight twists, turns, unexpected jeep trails, etc. that only a guidebook could lead me through. And of course, all the additional info regarding campsites and water was very helpful, as well.

I agree Wolf’s books are good to have along. It’s been several years since I used them, but I recall a few places in NM where I had some minor problems because they were written for SOBO. I also recall at least one area (MT?) where there were both NOBO and SOBO texts.

I felt that Wolf’s maps are generally not required if you have Jonothan’s maps and the DeLorme pages. One exception I can remember is the Florida and Mimbres Mts in So NM which were not covered by the Ley maps at that time.

I also made it just fine without a GPS. Constant attention to navigation is needed, which is a good idea whether you have a GPS or not.
