Working along the trail

I’m quite curious about this; how easy (or hard) is it to find work along the AT while hiking it? Anyone have any experience with this? What kinds of jobs are there? thanks–Mini-M.

Short term there’s not a lot, even if you have references for a specific job. The obvious problem is smell. You need a place to shower. I have, in the past, lived out of a tent and worked, but I had a support system for showers. You cannot depend on hostels or angels for this so it would be hard to even hold a fast food job. A qualified pharmacist or nurse would be able to bring in enough to afford a cheap room somewhere, but it is unlikely they would hire you unless you lied about how long you would be in town, which would not help your licence. Clearly if you have specific skills that are in high demand you could pull it off. You can work for stay here and there. I have worked for grocery stores for a few hours food. In short, it is not easy. I often thought it would be cool to hike to Pearisberg, work for a year, then to Waynesboro, work another year, on up, and set the record for the most zero days on a thruhike.

I think rather than try to find a job working in a store, I would try to hire myself as a handyman, mowing lawns, painting fences, or general lawn or house cleaning. I think that it would be much easier to find someone to let you help them with spring cleanup then let a grocery let you work for 3 days.
