Yes Virginia there is a yurt

Gee the yurt really exists. Southbound, it is less than a day from 149. I was there this morning and it is nice. A wood stove, propane stove, 4 bunks and room for lots more hikers. Apparently it works off donations but $20 per night is considered fair. You could miss it if you weren’t really looking for it. It has a green roof and is off trail a few hundred yards. It is up and to the right. Looks really weather proof. Neat! Any other info welcome.

They also have a plastic Port-o-potty that is easy to spot from the trail.

There are some fold out cots in the yurt in addition to the bunks. I used one instead of sleeping on the top bunk. The port-o-potty is locked. If you call and reserve the yurt in advance they give you the combination to the lock. Be advised the whole yurt can be reserved by a group.

The yurt is located at mile 8.7 in Segment 22. Durango-bound hikers should enter the meadow, turn around and look up hill. It is easy to miss. Denver-bound hikers will see it easily when entering the meadow.

Get your water from the meadow before heading up the hill. No water at the yurt.

It was a wonderful sight to me after hiking all day in the rain. A warm and cozy place to stay.

I stayed at the Yurt a couple of weeks ago on my through hike. I arrived sodden having walked through rain all day, so was very happy to dry out. there is a sign that says you can light the fire if it’s raining but I found there was a problem with the flu and only managed to smoke myself out. I too found the porta potty locked. It’s a great spot though!
