Yogi Guide ECHO lake to Sierra City

Hi everyone,
After getting caught Saturday in a snowstorm and having to turn around about a mile before the Packwood glacier + knife’s edge (only about 16 miles from White Pass), I surrender… A hard decision but I will not finish Washington this year.

I wanna see Washington when 1) I can SEE it and 2) when I am not likely to die seeing it.

So…since I still have N Cal from Echo lake to Castle Crag to do, I’m starting back in Echo…but somewhere in my hopscotching, I’ve lost my packet from Echo to Sierra City.

I’ve been able to duplicate everything (by stealing the copies my husband uses to track me  )…
except Yogi’s book…

Is there anyone who has the pages from miles 1094 to 1197 who would be willing to either fax, or scan and email to me?

I leave Thursday to hit the trail again so if anyone can help, I would appreciate it! Guess I would live without it, but it’s really helpful!

Thanks!

Whats up Sandals!? You must have been just behind us by like 2 days, by the Goat Rocks. We quit just after. Sorry I wasn’t around to blow smoke at you to make you forget the snow. Eheehehhe.

I don’t have the pages but I don’t think you’ll need them. I sent my Yogi’s pages to the dump after I realized she sent me the 05 version versus the newer 07 one that I paid for. If it is water info you need… you’ll find that in the data pages. Plus it is only a weeks hike from Echo lake to Castle Crag. If you are into it you can hike cross country over the Crags which is rather difficult I hear. I choose not to go that route because of 100 degree temps and several rattler sigtings going down into Castella. If you are going Nobo take the River trail along the Sacramento R. into Castella instead of the boring roadwalk Yogi recommends. I found the best swimming hole on the trail (actually off the PCT) while hiking west on that trail. The water is poblaby too cold this time of year though. If you want you can take the old PCT down to Castella/Dunsmuir NOBO…by doing this it hacks off some miles by taking a ridge direct to those towns (someone marked this on a obvious sign with a sharpie, I didn’t take it). The new PCT swings around private logging lands then switchbacks down to the towns. There is a nice 1 tent site at the end of the major switchback 10 miles south from Castella. If you camp any closer than that you’ll hear Semi’s engine braking all night. Good luck and have a great hike!

Only a weeks hike from Echo Lake to Castle Crags?? I know you were a fast hiker, but that’s over 400 miles!!

There is only one version of the book available at a time. I print in small quantities (usually about 200 at a time), and as soon as one batch is sold out, a newer version is offered. There is never an “old” version for sale. Each book that is ordered is the most current information available.

I purchased the handbook early spring 2007 to prepare for my 2007 thru-hike. If I would have know that I could have obtained the newer 2007 version I definately would have. I believe I was misled at the time of my purchase and I ended up recieving the 2005 version. Yogi, I would suggest supplementing the not quite soldout versions with the newer more relevant material you put in the most current versions. I don’t think that it would take too much more effort or money to include a couple of pages that list new water sources, updated town information, and logstical “to and from the trail” info. I have many more suggestions for your guide/handbook but it isn’t worth my time to preach to the choir. I just want to help out other future thru-hikers on their journey and save them the hassle and expense. I spent over $100. on maps and guides this year and I could have done the trip on much less if I was well informed prior to my purchases.

Spigot - It’s simply not possible that you ordered a book in 2007 and received a 2005 edition. I don’t keep old editions on hand, and the 7th edition was released in October 2006. As soon as one batch of books sells out, I print a new batch. Each time that happens I do post an update file to my website; that file includes all the new information.

The books are printed approximately twice per year, depending upon the demand. Sometimes there are many changes between printings, other times there are very few changes. Sometimes it is 3 months between printings, sometimes it is 9 months or longer. There is no way to predict when trail/town/water info will change. Also, there is not a logical pattern to when people purchase books.

I’m sorry you feel you were misled at the time of your purchase. I answer all inquiries honestly, based upon the information available at that time.

I too have had the same experience as spigot. nothing new. I just got back from a AT walk using wingfoots guide. seems that there is some kind of backlash against wingfoot on the AT. I don’t get it as his book is so much more than the PCT and CDT handbooks. It is small, well researched and available for purchase annually before the thru hiking season kicks off. It is simple enough to make a guide book available for purchase when most thru hikers start their hike annually. I think it is a cop out to say that there is no way to predict when thru hikers will need these books. Come on, this author is a triple crowner. Of course she knows when we need this info. However at least you got a apology spigot. I was told to purchase a sharpie!

Is this the same Adam Bradley known for trollish ways? Cause if so, perhaps I should read the post in a different way.

As it stands now it seems to me you’re trying to make a big deal out of nothing and taking things out of context/not thinking any of the issues involved through. If shes telling you its impossible that he got a 2005 book in 2007, then why not accept that for truth?

Makes perfect sense to me that with such a lowscale printing operation, you’d sell through old stock and then print new stuff (which by the way I imagine you’ve seen on her site…they’re called “updates,” and to say they aren’t there is to call me a liar).

And finally, how bout thinking things through some. Your statement “It is simple enough to make a guide book available for purchase when most thru hikers start their hike annually,” kind of tells me that you’ve either not hiked before, or don’t really acknowledge the HYOH mantra. If you hiked before you’d probably have noticed that theres a ton of different styles present ranging from the “fly by the seat of their pants” hikers, to the micromanagers who have a itinerary and have planned their hikes for years ahead of time. You can even look through this site to prove her point that it really is impossible to know when everyones going to need a guide. I see posts all the time talking about some thru-hike in 2032 and who would like to start planning. Therefore, they may buy their book in Oct. instead of what you’re saying EVERYONE should do, which is purchase in April.

And by the way, way to take things out of context. Your substitution of the word “need” for what she was saying, and your complete lack of acknowledgment towards her relevant statement of town info constantly changing, tells me you aren’t really looking for honest discourse. Seems to me you just wanted to stir things up, try to create a point, and toss your weight on the side of being contrary. I guess your reputation precedes you on this one, and I should have known what to expect just by reading your name.
