Move to East Tennessee. I used to live in Maryville, TN which is about 15-20 minutes outside of the Smokies. It is a beautiful safe area. There is also a great job market in the greater Knoxville area. We have a wonderful outdoor community that includes hikers, bikers, and paddlers. Wildcat AT 04 lives here, Sgt Rock(Whiteblaze Moderator) lives here too. Great place. Don’t forget, the Smokies have over 900 miles of hiking trails. There is also a lot of National Forest land nearby. Check it out.
Peace, Love and Hikin’!

The southeast is beautiful, and really conservative. The NE is beautiful. and less conservative. I would suggest you factor your background, interests, and political sensibilities before jumping into anything.
Where have you been for a long time?

Pensacola, Florida
Ya, I want to go up Northwest NC and check it out.
What is the diff between tenn and nc if u had to choose.
NiteCrawler
I live in North Florida, too, closer to Tallahassee. If I were going to move anywhere else in the US, it would be NC. It’s just a gorgeous place. I especially like the area around Asheville.

Heat 365/year with humidity to match, year round mosquitos and fire ants, and did I mention FLAT and STEAMY year round?

I live in Chattanooga, TN. My first choice was Asheville, NC - but work is hard to come by in that town. If I was a retiree, the Asheville area (including Arden, Black Mountain, Marshall, Hendersonville & Brevard) is where I’d look. There is a vibrant cultural scene there, and very few football fans walking around in those hideous orange colors. :lol

I think you’ll also find that TN is less expensive the NC in most border areas. Around the Hampton TN area you may find some real antagonism to the hiking community particularly around the area where the AT crosses major roads (rt 19 E and the Watauga lake area).

Like Jeff mentioned you need to look at what your interests, income etc are tending towards. Try the site findyourspot.com. You take a little quiz and then they suggest the area of the country that is best for you. Hopefully it’s by the AT but maybe not.

I am Capt Chaos’s Dad in Maryville, Tenn. Knoxville is 15 miles away and a large city with the Smokies Just about 15 minutes away. So many trails to hike, it would take you years to hike them all. And we get to go meet the ThruHikers every year as they come through.
Hot Springs is just an Hour away, Damascus is 2 Hours away, Springer is 4 hours away.
Ask Sgt Rock, he will tell you, this place rocks !!

I am a military brat, growning up in Germany. I have lived all over the world and still have not found Paradise. 3 years in Hawaii was close.
I heard good things about Boone, NC area. and I like Tenn. I think I need to hang out for a while see what happens…
Maybe I will just go hiking for a couple of years…hehe

The last thing we need is more damn people moving up to this here paradise. Stay in Florida, stay in Atlanta, stay in New York City. NiteCrawler, these people are all lying to you. It’s misible up here. Nothing to do, no big cities, no traffic, no attitudes, it’s down right boring.
Take this quiz. Do you want a boring life? Do you want to hang around people with old, worn out values? People that still have a fear of God? Some of these people are so polite they make you sick. Do you want people to actually ask how you are doing, and mean it? Stay Put.
Don’t take my advice take Ned Beatty’s, get the hell out of there. Whatever you heard about Boone, East Tennessee, or Ashville is a down right lie. Stay where you are. We don’t mind THRU-hikers as long as they don’t decide to stay. We don’t want to be the next Pensacola.
