Not much news yet (1/3/08 at 9:50am est) but there is a missing hiker from the Atlanta area on Blood Mountain. The hiker and her dog started a day hike yesterday and have not returned.

This sucks! Everytime I read an article like the one about this hiker, it just makes me sick. I hope they find her and she is alright.

I pray that she is safe. If anyone knows about search groups or other needs please let us know here at TJ. Or email me. It seems like she didn’t live to far from the trail. I read that her family flew in from Colorado. God Bless them at this difficult time in their lives.

A friend just text me and said she read on WhiteBlaze.com the person of interest was a member of the forum and possibly kept tabs on other hikers itinerary’s. Anybody else heard this? I remember ready here where a lady was complaining about being hit-on at Whiteblaze.com and warned others about posting their photo.

WB says nothing of the sort. Someone simply posed the question as to whether the POI might be a member. Why don’t you get your facts straight before coming on here and trying to get everyone all fired up with your BS. This is a time of great tragedy, you moron, not time to glorify yourself as some super sleuth! Take off!

Post go up and then get DELETED on a regular basis over there by the moderators, so this stuff probably was posted but deleted. However, this does allow typical WB members like yourself to rant otherwise. Go back to WB with all the other BS artist. YOU TAKE OFF!

It really bothers me to hear of this case, I consider the North GA Mts to be one of my favorite playgrounds. I am a women who hikes alone a lot. This won’t stop me but I maybe have some of the earlier fears, that I thought I had gotten passed.

Finding her water bottle and her dog’s leash is not a good sign. I pray all is well.

What is with the name calling? This is a serious situation. A girl, and more importantly a fellow hiker, is missing and perhaps in trouble. How about keeping things in perspective. No one needs that kind of childish crap right now. If you don’t agree with a post, so what. People will judge its merit for themselves.

The story is now everywhere, but MSNBC seems to be following it best. Their current coverage is
here.

The story says that the police have located the “person of interest” identified earlier, so all efforts now look to be focused on the search mission. The reports keep stressing her experience as a hiker, so lets hope that it will be enough to see her through. It doesn’t look good, though; her dog was found (alive) over 40 miles away at a grocery store, apparently having arrived there on it’s own. Fortunately, at least in wilderness survival terms, they haven’t found any of her other gear besides a water bottle, so she’s at least (assuming no foul play) still not without resources. Let’s all hope that that proves to be enough.

It would be wonderful to practice prevention on the AT to avoid this and similar misfortunes, but I’m not sure what practices would help. I’m re-designing my myspace to devote it to trail safety, but am not sure what advice to offer. Hike with a dog? Apparently, this woman did. Perhaps always hiking with a partner would be good, but that’s an ideal that’s hard to reach. Few of us have friends who like to long-distance hike and who keep our pace as well. Often, we meet our hiking partners on the trail. In addition, in 1993, a male and female couple was murdered, and the female was raped, so even having a partner doesn’t ensure security. If anyone has suggestions, I’d welcome them. As I mentioned, I do plan to post a blog about safety on my myspace as well as write an article about safety, so any suggestions would be welcome. Happy hiking!

Suggestions: Stay home. In your case, that would be good. Of how about mandatory behavior regulations for all people? It’s said that a conservative is just a liberal who’s been mugged. How slowly they learn. Carry guns, knives, pepper spray, staffs, hiking poles, tasers; recharge your personal fear reserves regularly, attempt to legislate behavior, sit around and sing koom-buy-ah. The cliche “dumb girl” has it’s roots somewhere: THINK ABOUT IT.

The discussion of this unfortunate event has been suspended over on White Blaze. Gotta feel that power to limit honest discussion, don’t they?
.
.
When you Google “White Blaze” you get this “WhiteBlaze is a Appalachian Trail discussion forum and information site…”
.
But apparently, the discussion part isn’t so important.

Seems they (moderators) have deleted post by other WB forum members linking the POI to WhiteBlaze. What you’ve got over there is a bunch of armchair hikers trying now to become armchair detectives.

WhiteBlaze used to be a good forum where honest discussion was allowed, no matter what the opinion or subject matter. But after Sgt. Rock handed control to his wife and ATtroll, it went downhill fast. Both believe in heavy handed censorship (Dixiecritter even admitted as much), and they censor and gag people regularly.

If you want free discussion, don’t expect much at WhiteBlaze.
