REMEMBER 9/11/01
Chris Oakley (Bloke)
Yep. Remember how those islamic assh**es took down 4 jets with BOX CUTTERS. Is the USA any safer today? Hardly.
wolf
yes, peace and sympathy to the familes…
maybe we should have a rememberance day calendar for every bad thing that has ever happened in the world ever?
I knew I forgot to post a memorial message asking everyone to remember the Omagh bombing…
dont forget to remember those millions of dead in Rwanda…
and for the family of the 54yo south korean who commited suicide at the WTO summit on sep7 in cancun…
and for those who lost their lives in the palestine / israel bombings and attacks these last two weeks…
and for JLo and Affleck who have to postpone their wedding
and for the 1000+ arrested in nepalise rallies in khatmandu
Peace
Well, then, you are fueled by and acting on the same hatred as those men, that’s why God says love your enemies. Otherwise, we are no better than our enemies and I know you’re better than them .
Peace.

the events of 9/11/01 which left just over 3000 dead were indeed horrible, however, each and every day more than 3000 people die from starvation and hunger related disease. perhaps we could think of those folks today as well. the offensive post re:muslims is sadly representative of an all too pervasive feeling in the US. islam and muslims are no more responsible for the actions of those who perpetrated the events of 9/11, than are christains for timothy mcviegh’s or eric rudolph’s actions. the actions of a few terribly misguided individuals should not be assumed to represent an entire religion or group. until americans understand the impact of their actions, or lack thereof, on others, (here i refer to US foreign policy) we will continue to find ourselves surprised, even stunned to realize others don’t see the world as we do. and that in fact, they hold us responsible as a democracy for the actions of our leaders.

We use Islam, the Nazi used Judaism, both for the same scam. We’re all stupid sheep lead to slaughter by mad men.

Regardless of your political views do remember all those who died two years ago today.
With that said please remember that this is a hiking forum, not a forum for political debate.
Leif
I don’t think there is any chance that anyone will forget. By the way the AT (and the vast majority of all trails) were created by politics. Since it the exist almost entirely on federal land they continue to exist almost completely at the whim of politics. Hiking/freedom is an extremely political issue in almost every way. However, I will shut up now.
Blue Jay
Very valid arguments. BTW, Thanks to the politics of William Bartram, we have a historic jewel known as the AT!
Word.
BATMAN
Bartram was a naturalist who lived in the 1700s and traveled the SE between 1775-1777. The Bartram Trail which runs concurrent with the AT near Wayah Bald (yellow blazes) has its NW terminus on Cheoah Bald.
I think you’re referring to Benton MacKaye (rhymes with eye - not hay), the visionary who came up with the idea while atop Stratton Mountain in Vermont in the early 1920s.

Your’re right. I don’t have any idea what I was thinking. Must stop smoking CRACK…

Some say violence doesn’t solve anything. I believe this is a lie.
I took my children to Caledonia State Park in Pennsylvania so I could show them the AT. I took them there so I could show them Gettysburg.
The sad truth is that violence has solved more issues in the recorded history of man then anything else.
The sad truth is that Islam is engaged in an ideological crusade against the west. We can dig in and fight with men like Bush, or we can bury our head in the sand with men like Clinton.
If the west chooses to deny this war, this crusade, the west will pay for it with there lives or worse there freedoms.
There is no hate element in it; at least for me, it’s merely grim depressing work that someone must do. I wish there were hate. It would make the job so much easier.
I’ve read the Bible, I’ve read the Koran. Comparing the two is like comparing prime rib to dog food.
I’ve made my choice.
FWIW, I’m a member of the most efficient killing machine ever devised by man, the US Armed Forces.
I’ll miss Holloween, Thanksgiving, My Wedding Aniversary, Christmas, New Years, and my 40th Birthday with my family this year. I’ll miss music recitals, school plays, three science projects, and an opportunity to help my children learn Higher Algebra. My wife will be left alone again to pay the bills, run the errands, and raise four children by herself for at least four months. You see, I’ll be in Bagdad.
It’s one thing to say your against something. It’s quite another to do something about it.
Sorry for the soap box.

Let’s face it. If it were not for people like Tu that are willing to pick up arms to fight for our country, we would not have the luxury of many things we love, hiking the AT being one of them.
Thank you my friend for your service to our country.
Thank you for taking the fight to the enemy in their country, perhaps we will not have to fight them here.
You have nothing to apologize for, you have earned your spot on the soapbox.

What are we fighting for?.. We were free before 9.11 and we’re free now. We’re spending hundreds of billions of dollars on wars we have no business being a part of. We have a president who lied to the world about Hussain planning to purchase nuclear materials from Africa and we’ve yet to discover any weapons of mass destruction. Homeland security is a joke. If anyone wants to blow up a building with an airplane, they would probably not have a hard time doing it. Just look at the guy who shipped himself via FedEx. Where was Homland security then? I hope duct tape, plastic sheeting and a moronic color code scheme is worth the money. In 20 years from now we will refer to 9.11 as the 1st large terrorist attack… there will probably be many by then.

I will be registering to vote just to be sure Bush isn’t in the White House for another four years.

What are we fighting for?
Your choice, your grand children can bow to Allah five times a day, die, be oppressed, or even enslaved, or they can live free. This is an ideological war that will be fought for at least a generation. Perhaps more.
With regard to intelligence, it is an ambigous science at best full of truths and lies, confused by what one wants to do and what one is able to do. Further complicated by bravado. The government must prepare contingencies for the worst case scenario.
Why are we fighting? I don’t know why. If you were on the AT in a shelter and someone who you didn’t even know walked up to you and punched you in the nose you have about three choices. You can run, you can fight back, or you can have the guy beat the crap out of you. I really don’t care why we are despised by Muslims. That is there garbage and I’m not about to make it mine. I don’t give a damn about Muslim’s if anything, I pity them. What I know is that the US can’t run and I’m not about to have someone else impose there will upon us. As they say in New Hampshire “Live Free or Die”.
Homeland security is a joke. In fact, I see it as making serious in roads in its own right at limiting our freedoms. It is impossible to defend against every contingency that a terrorist could impose. So why try? Take the fight to the enemy, play the game on his field and make him defend his turf. That is what we are doing. That in the end is why we did Iraq. Bottom line; homeland security is an institutional Maginot line. It won’t stop an Islamic blitzkreig.

I dont think it’s just Muslims that despise us. I’m pretty sure it’s the whole world. Why? Probably because the US sticks it’s nose into everyone elses business. We think we are higher and mightier than the rest of the world. That’s arrogant. I’m not saying this is not a great country. Indeed, it is and I’m glad to be living here as opposed to some other places. But we are not a perfect country. And we are not a “better” country. Another example of American arrogance can be found right in the White House a few months ago. “Make no mistake about it; We dont need anyone’s permission to go to war.” Just about the DUMBEST friggin’ thing a president could have said on a worldwide broadcast as we finally saw SOME hope of possible UN support. I don’t blame them for not supporting the war after our own president suggested with that one comment that it didn’t really matter what they said. And for us to now expect the world to send troops and money to assist in the rebuilding of Iraq after they didn’t even SUPPORT the war in the FIRST PLACE?? I think that’s all i have to say for now.
