I started my thru hike attempt on my 65th birthday, 4/30/16, near Front Royal doing a flip-flop. My knees gave out in Vernon, NJ. Now I’m a SLASHer (Slow Long-Ass Section Hiker). Have completed all but 70 miles of the Shenandoahs north to Burlington, VT. Meeting OG Bob there in July to hike to Maine. We met hiking in ‘16 hiking thru PA and then hiked together NJ-VT in ‘17. We each have a car so lots of flexibility doing our hikes (slack packing) and of course we can help out fellow hikers. Can’t wait to hit the trail again.

Hi everyone! My name is Ken. I’m an active duty Army RN. I’m planning on doing the TRT this July for my first thru hike.
Lana, yes anxious is the key word. Now I’m down to the nitty gritty! Excited to walk - see you out there!
You are very welcome Tara_Jean. It is so simple to use and takes away the guesswork in our weather.
Hi,
The Appalachian Trail has been on my bucket list for several years now.
At the end of 2017 I realised how desperate I was to do this; so I have committed to attempt my flip-flop thru-hike in 2020.
Looking forward to meeting some great people and seeing some amazing sights.
Hello! My name is David aka “Fizzle”. I’ve had the dream to hike the AT since I was a boy. I’m retired, 62 yrs. old and did a few shortish hikes on the AT at Erwin, Tn. to train. I’m now doing the same on the Florida Trail. My journey starts March 15! Happy trails!
Hi my name is Don ,Trail name BLUE. Former US Marine who has dreamed of hiking the AT since I was teenager. I dedicate one month a year if possible, starting in PA sobo then bounce back to PA and head nobo. 2017 was my first experience on the AT. I Rucked a 70-mile section Boiling Spring PA,
to the Maryland border for a little Recon .Met some nice people and looking forward to my hike in the spring . Plan on completing the state of Maryland. I guess if I were to label myself I would be a flip-flopping section hiker who will eventually finish the entire AT.God willing. see you on the trail.RAHH!
Hi everyone. My name is Tom And I’m doing a thru hike starting March 23rd. I’m 62 and a recent prostrate cancer survivor and have finally retired. My wife suggested that it was a good time to finally make hiking the trail a reality.
Hi Leif,
I am thru-hiking NOBO starting mid-april, and am super excited!!! I am on a budget and would love some suggestions as to what type of tent and sleeping bag would be best? Is there any truth to the saying “you get what you pay for” in this area, or can I simply compare weight and cost?
Thanks!!

My name is Jen. I have been planning an AT thru-hike with my fiance for about 6 months. We plan to start the middle of April, northbound. I joined trail journal and began journaling a few nights ago. As a new member I tried to create a journal on my account for my fiance so we could easily access the page. In the process I created numerous journals named 2018 Appalachian hike. The problem is that when I tried to change my name to my partners it changes rename for all the journals including mine. My partner has not started journaling. My question is can I create a journal with her name under my account or does she need to create her own. The second question is how do I delete all the extra journals? Sorry if this a lot . I’m happy to be a new member of this group. Thank you.
Hello, I’m John. This year I’m attempting a thru-hike of the AT with my dad. We are NOBO starting March 14. I hope to meet a lot of cool people on the trail.
Hi, my trailname is Bon Bon. I hiked the AT in 2015 and now I am planning to hike the Florida Trail in 2019. I
I’m Brenda, no trail name. My dad took my brother and I on a day hike from Newfound Gap north in the GSMNP when I was about 9 or 10, late 1960’s. Homemade backpacks and Tupperware. That’s when my love for the Smokies and backpacking began and that’s where I’ve done most of it. I guess you could say I’m an AT section hiker that’s obsessed with the mountains of the southeast US. I’ve carried the desire of a through hike most of my life. One day…
Hi, I’m Jackie
I’ll be thru-hiking the AT in 2020.
It is a long way away; but I’ve made the decision now. Plenty of time to square-away the finances, organise a visa, sort out my gear and organise support and mail drops.
Coming from Australia will be a little difficult as I won’t have the home base and support for mail-outs, etc. But I have some friends over there that should be there if I need them.
Will be meeting some great people on the trail too.
Empty nest mom. Have wanted to thru-hike the A.T. for the past ten years. It is finally the right time to take a wee bit of a break from my life and surrender myself to the glory, solitude, and challenges that the A.T. beholds.
Hi Jackie,
Something you might try is to get a hold of an outfitter here in the USA, you may find one that will mail you what you need out to the trail, save you from having to ship from Australia. Of course, the towns along the trail carry a lot of things that hikers need. Once you know where you’ll be resupplying, do some internet searching to see what all you can find in the location. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the tips @gorpgobbler2015
I have bought most of my gear from REI over the last few years, both online and on my occasional US trips. They tend to be way cheaper than the Australian suppliers. The weight of my hiking pack is way lighter than the normal suitcase most people bring, so carrying it to the US won’t be a problem.
I just may need a larger than normal bounce box, or maybe I can get a friend to look after my winter wear during the warmer months.
