Wingfoot's site

Apparently, Trailforums is a dirty word on Wingfoot’s site. Went to Trailplace earlier this evening and tried to post this message:

Sources of A.T. info (thread title)

Here are some good sites:

www.aldha.org
http://www.trailforums.com
www.whiteblaze.net

################################

And THIS is what appeared after I hit the “enter” button:

Here are some good sites:

www..org
www.
******.com
www.**********.net

THEN, after less than half an hour, I went back to the site and the thread was deleted. Wingfoot was logged on.

Wingfoot wrote a nice guidebook that I used on an AT thru-hike. I enjoyed the bits of humor as well as the natural and historial insights. After liking his book so much, I was saddened to learn that he has some unfortunate personal qualities. But this is a case where I can easily appreciate his good side (his book) and overlook his bad side (by not visiting his website). I think I’ll probably be a happier person by taking that perspective rather than the reverse.

The guidebook is hardly his idea. Darrell Maret wrote the original guidebooks. Wingfoot capitalized on it when Darrell decided to stop writing it.

I was pre-planning for a thru-hike in March of 2000.In November of 99 I ordered 2 copies(one for the trail and the other for my wife to keep track of my progress)of his 2000 guidebook. He(WF) informed me that it was late going to press, but I would have them before starting my hike.I started my hike without the guidebooks, but had to leave the trail in the Smokies.June of 2000,after I had been home several months,I received them.
I’ve emailed him a few times with questions, only to be told to order his guidebook.I’ve been a member of the A.T.C. since 99,so that’s where I get all my literature now.
It’s well worth the membership fee to have a place, that is reliable.Need I say more?

Doesn’t he also rely on the memebers of his “club” to write “his” guidebook?
I think it’s pretty shitty that the members of this club provide him with all the information he needs to update things, and he profits from it.

Granted, it’s a great book. However, I haven’t, and won’t, use it. He’s just too arrogant and a prick for me to give him any money, no matter HOW good “his” guidebook is.

he’s a quick one, just for the heck of it, I went to your link, it’s been removed too. I agree with Eric, used the guidebook, but I won’t patronize Trailplace, esp. after his hissy fit Nov. 01 in the middle of my planning process when he shut down the whole site, threads and all. The guy has some major control issues. Maybe he should move to Erwin!

We were in the same boat in '02. He said he would send the book to Damascus and we could pick it up there??? Would he and Uncle Johnny make a good pair!

I joined trailplace because I figured there is another site I can learn more about the AT and the “family” associated with the AT. I was starting to think that I was at a site of a real egotist. Every question I tried to ask him was blown off. You have confirmed my thoughts. Thank you all for the insight. I feel this site is much more informal, informing, and friendly. Again, thanks to all of those who make entries to forums to advance my learning of the real AT “family”.

I also ordered the 2000 version in late '99 for my Feb '00 start. Kept being delayed. Finally told WNut by email that I’d take the '99 version instead. Never heard from him about either version. At the last minute read that he had never produced a '99 version, so rush ordered an AT version. Emailed him to say I didn’t want his. Left Harpers Ferry in late May with a bad foot that required an operation, and discovered he had cashed my check anyway, but hadn’t even sent anything. Complained by email. No answer. Complained on his site. My email was deleted and I was “banned”. Three times I created new email addresses on Hotmail and Yahoo, and told everyone what was going on. He kept “banning” each one, but finally knew I was persistent and sent me an email telling me he would refund my check, which he did. Jeez, really big bucks. I kept it as a souvenir. Hope it screwed up his checkbook for a bit, but doubt he cared. One of the guys, Thirsty, I was with earlier in '00 went to his home in March '00, then in Hot Springs, and pounded on his door, demanding a refund. He knew he (Wingnut) was home. WN finally came to the door and eventually gave him his refund. Bill is right. It wasn’t WN’s idea. He’s scum. Don’t buy all the crap about how much he gives to the trail. Talk to people on the trail that know him. You’ll find out.

I was on WATL when Wingnut in one of his control fits, decided to shut down our women’s list. He did it very quickly, and if it hadn’t been for some list members having archived some of the posts, the women’s list would have been dead. Instead, it was like Phoenix, and resurrected. Its even better today, with over 400 women members, and its a yahoo group list. After what I experienced being on Wingnut’s site, I don’t plan to ever buy his book. I did recently buy the AT Data book, and the Companion both put out by the ATC. Hopefully, that is all I will need. He is definitely a control freek.

Okay, he sensored my trail name in '00 and i’m still hot. What possible connection could anyone make between W1 and myself. I don’t do republican…or politics in general.

Have you looked at trailplace lately? No one post on his site except the same 4-5 people. Out of the thousands of hikers out there, the numbers speak for them selves. I know none of my fellow hikers from my A.T. thru hike this year will EVER go near his site. The word from the trail is a very strong thing.

Decided to check trailplace’s forums out last night and now you cannot even view any forums, etc. under the “main menu” without registering. Guess he wants to try to boost up the number of “registered” users. No loss there I would say.

I use his site a lot, simply because it has allowed me to meet several other hikers, but it really sucks having all the political and other trail issue discussions censored. But like he is quick to remind everyone, it is his site, he can do with it what he wants. Thankfully all the people on it are not as egotistical!
